Northern Premier League Division One South - THE MATCH Leek Town 5-1 Willenhall Town - Saturday 13th March 2010 - Kick-Off 1500
Andrew Clader 17 Ashley Miller 56, 63 (PEN) Dean Crowe 60 Dan Cope 90 Paul Rutter 90
'Unable to Cope!' - Official Match Report Leek, unbeaten at Harrison Park since the 28th of March 2009, thought they were off to a flying start as the ball found the back of the guests net, within 30 seconds; however the effort was ruled off side, despite the robust protests of the home fans who claimed the ball had skidded off a Lockman.Just six minutes later and Ashley Miller found the ball falling to him, his low drive from 30 yards, deflecting for a corner. The Reds were forced into an early change as Wolves trialist George Pomroy- Crowe replaced the injured Gavin Davies within the first quarter of the game. On the quarter of the hour, a loose ball fell to Leon Ashman, and clean through on goal, it took an awesome tackle by the last man Shaun Griffiths to save the situation. The side rooted at the bottom of the division took the lead when a curling corner by Craig Hancox, saw Andre Calder jump head and shoulders above the defence to head the ball into the roof of the net in the 17th minute. Straight from the re-start and Robbie Hawthorne drove the ball straight into the arms of Matt Jones. Just before the half hour a slip up in the Lockmen defence saw Leon Ashman clean through with just Matt Jones to beat, however the keeper produced a fantastic block to keep the Reds in front for the half time break. Most of the 235 crowd present were Leek fans, and most thought their play-off pushing team were hard done by in the first half by the officials but they could have no complaints in the second half of the officials. Within five minutes of the game’s re-start George Pomroy-Crowe worked his way clean through, only to be denied by the hand of the last man, Matt Johnson. The defender was very fortunate not to be shown a red card for his offence. Liam Rigby sent the free kick just over the bar. The hosts drew level in the 56th minute, a long ball from the half way line by Wayne Cordon deceived everyone, except for Ashley Miller who slid in at the far post to score. Four minutes later Dean Crowe put Leek ahead following some good build up play, his powerful low shot saw a diving Matt Jones get his hand to the ball, but the effort was too strong and the ball burst into the net. Minutes later and Paul Rutter took a tumble following an Andre Calder tackle, the ref awarding a very harsh penalty, which Ashley Miller sent into the roof of the net in the 63rd minute. The Lockmen nearly snatched a goal back in the 78th minute when a Griffith’s free kick from 40 yards out forced a brilliant save from Steve Hodgson. With 10 minutes remaining a deflected clearance skidded goal wards, a retreating Matt Jones managed to get his palm to the ball, only for the ball to fall cruelly to Leon Ashman, the Leek striker completely miss-kicked the ball, and sub Dan Cope was able to tap the ball in to make it a flattering 4-1 score line. With seconds remaining Matt Jones pulled off a fantastic point blank save to deny Robbie Hawthorne, but the keeper couldn’t do anything about the goalmouth scramble in added time which saw Paul Rutter claim Leeks fifth goal. Lockmen line up; Matt Jones, Gavin Davies, Liam Rigby, Shaun Griffiths ©, Andre Calder, Matt Whitehouse, Ricky Nicholls, Matt Dorgan, Andy Dunkerley, Mike Robertson, Craig Hancox. Bench; Carlton Rose, George Pomroy-Crowe, Ashley Porter, Jamal Pinnock, Andy Worley.
