Northern Premier League Division One South - THE MATCH Willenhall Town 0-2 Brigg Town Andrew Holt 27 Paul Grimes 63 'Grime-acing Display' - Official Match Report Steve Pomroys first home game in charge of Willenhall showed a lot of promise, but ended up in defeat. As both sides had an early chance the game was gearing up to be a good contest. Firstly Jonathon Pickess headed just over for the visitors, while Danny Yearwood fired a shot wide for Willenhall. After 12 minutes a mistake by Andrew Pettinger almost gifted Willenhall the lead. He came off his line to deal with a forward ball by Rickey Nicholls, but the keeper misjudged the bounce, allowing Adrian Manchester to arrive first and head at goal. Matthew Plant was on hand to spare the blushes and clear off the line. 3 minutes later and a good through ball left Tommy Spall in space. But home keeper Steve Jackson did well to tip the shot round the post. Plant just headed the corner over the bar, whilst 3 minutes later a header from Pickess produced a fine point blank save from Jackson. As Brigg started to command the game, Andrew Holt looked to be clean through on goal, only a superb challenge from Yearwood preventing a shot on goal. Willenhall had the ball in the net on 26 minutes after a good passing move, but Rory Curtis was offside. A minute later Brigg took the lead when a deep cross from Daniel Barrett saw an initial effort produce another great stop from Jackson, but the rebound fell to Holt, who had the simplest of finishes. To end the half, Willenhall captain Todd Perry had a header cleared off the line, whilst Brigg’s Oliver Fisher had a 20 yard shot saved.
Half time: Willenhall 0 Brigg 1
Brigg started the half the better side, and Oliver Chappell fired just over from distance, before a 35 yard shot from Fisher had Jackson backtracking, but somehow he forced the ball over his bar. Brigg effectively sealed the game on 63 minutes, as a poor pass from Jayson O’Kelly allowed Brigg to quickly launch an attack. A ball down the left found Paul Grimes, who cut inside, rounded Jackson and fired the ball into the bottom corner. It could have gotten worse for Willenhall 6 minutes later, Jackson came out of his area and failed to cleanly win the ball, but Pickess couldn’t bring a cross under control and the danger was cleared. Despite the best endeavours of Willenhall, including a first start for 16 year old George Pomroy-Crowe, the closest they came was a 20 yard shot from Terry Morton, and a header just over from Sean Pugh. Steve Pomroy's men entertain 'Willenhall Traders' Football Club on Thursday evening (1930 KO) in an arranged friendly, before the return to Northern Premier League Division One South action against Stamford AFC on Saturday.
