Northern Premier League Division One South - THE MATCH Willenhall Town 1-2 Mickleover Sports Karl Ashton 13 Martin Smyth 27 Shaun Griffiths 40 'A Captain's Performance!' - Official Match Report Despite matching the league leaders for large parts of the game, Dave Porter’s first game in charge of Willenhall Town ended in defeat. An initial first half hour of pressure from the visitors saw them take a 2 goal lead. On 9 minutes Alex Steadman evaded one challenge, but his shot from the edge of the area was straight at Matt Jones in the Willenhall goal. The breakthrough came on 13 minutes. Karl Ashton was allowed too much space on the edge of the Willenhall area, and had time to guide a half volley into the bottom corner. After Eric Groves had fired a 25 yard shot over the bar, Mickleover went 2-0 up, as a well worked move across the edge of the area, saw the ball played though to Martin Smythe, who slotted in from close range. After this Willenhall settled down and played some good football, and a good through ball by Nathan Howells found Nick Robertson in space, but his shot from a tight angle was just wide. Then on 40 minutes Willenhall pulled a goal back. A well delivered free kick by George Crowe was only cleared to Jamall Pinnock, and after his shot had hit the post, Shaun Griffiths was on hand to turn the ball in from close range. The half ended with Steadman and Ashton both having efforts, which Jones dealt with easily. Half time: Willenhall 1 Mickleover 2 The second half was a tight affair, with both sides struggling to carve out opportunities. Colin Hoyle skied a free kick from a good position on 57 minutes, whilst the returning Danny Yearwood came on and looked lively down the right for Willenhall. On the hour mark, Ed Ryan lost possession on the edge of his area, but a shot from Ashton hit the post before being cleared. As Willenhall committed more men forward in search of an equaliser, a long ball forward from Wayne Brown was allowed to bounce, allowing Ricky Nicholls to hit an effort just over. In the dying minutes of the game, Mickleover could have added a third, but after Ashton did well to turn, his shot was weakly hit at Jones. Willenhall line-up: Jones, Robinson, Ryan, Griffiths, Brown, Crowe, M. Robertson (Nicholls), Whitehouse, Howells (Rose), N. Robertson, Pinnock (Yearwood). Mickleover line-up: Whittle, Everett-Elliott, Hoyle, Martin (Walshe), Barrow, Strzyzewski, Graves, Smythe (S. Carter), Ashton, O’Connell (Middleditch), Steadman. Attendance: 52
